Your Customised Care

Founded in 2020, Wood MediSpa offers a variety of surgical and non-surgical treatments. Wood MediSpa is a ground-breaking institution: the first surgeon-owned UK-based private hospital capable of providing both local anaesthetic and general anaesthetic procedures, and overnight in-patient stays.

Mr McDiarmid founded his first private clinic in 2002, now named Wood Clinic Plymouth. Opening Wood Clinic was the first step towards his dream of being able to tailor every step of the patient journey to ensure absolute excellence. The Clinic was designed to enable a more personal touch in the care of patients and to allow minor procedures to be performed within the premises with no compromise.

Now, with the opening of Wood MediSpa, Mr McDiarmid and our carefully selected consultants are able to perform major procedures under general anaesthesia on the Wood MediSpa premises. Wood MediSpa is primarily host to plastic surgeons: this focus means that we have a specialist team who provide consistent care across all aspects of the patient journey.

All patients are treated with the greatest level of respect and confidentiality is paramount. We recognise that our patients are all unique individuals with different goals and needs. We completely avoid a production-line mentality and are happy to spend as long as it takes discussing the details of a procedure.

Pre-surgical consultations are performed by your own consultant and, unlike many commercial clinics, we never use a nurse advisor or salesperson. The pre-operative consultation is a crucial step in selecting the correct procedure for a particular patient and it should always be undertaken in the presence of the operating surgeon.

There is ever increasing commercialism in aesthetic surgery. Commercial clinics advertise using impossibly beautiful models (who have probably never had aesthetic surgery) in the back pages of glossy magazines, and select patients using nurse advisors or sales people. Patients are then operated on by mainly non-accredited surgeons. The usual line is ‘surgery is carried out by our FRCS surgeons’ – this means that the surgeon in question usually has a qualification in general surgery, not plastic surgery. Personally we wouldn’t be comfortable with somebody whose only qualification was in general surgery operating on our faces! You can be assured that all surgeons operating within Wood MediSpa are appropriately qualified specialists.

CQC & Accreditation

Wood MediSpa has been inspected by the Care Quality Commission, achieving an overall rating of “Good” with the Caring element of our service rated as “Outstanding”. Our current CQC inspection report is available online.

Wood MediSpa is the first UK surgery centre to achieve this international gold standard and is a reflection our continued aim of providing excellent surgery and an exceptional patient experience.

The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) was established in 1980 to standardize and improve the quality of health care in outpatient facilities. AAAAS accredits thousands of facilities worldwide. Physicians, clinicians, legislators, state/federal health agencies and patients acknowledge that AAAASF sets the “Gold Standard in Accreditation.”

• AAAAS requires surgeons to be board certified and have hospital privileges for any procedure they perform.

• AAAASF requires the use of anesthesia professionals for deeper levels of anesthesia.

• AAAAS requires a safe and clean surgical environment that meets stringent standards.

• AAAASF requires peer review (peer oversight) and tracks data for thousands of individual cases.

• AAAASF works closely with facilities and provides help throughout the accreditation process.

• AAAAS champions patient safety worldwide and has for nearly 40 years.
